Session 14: Immigration

Whether you agree or disagree, I think we should accept and improve our immigration system and allow immigrants to receive citizenship. Here are the reasons.

I realize the majority who complains about immigrations are our average working class citizens. They fear that  immigrants are taking their jobs and decreasing the economy

I don’t think that’s the case. Through my knowledge, I think it is the corporations/capitalism that is taking advantage of others because corporations/big businesses pay people who are willing to work at a cheap cost. Not just the Mexicans, it is everyone nation-wide!! This is another form of exploitation and many of us don’t realize that because it is happening in our own country and our average working class citizens rather blame foreigners for losing their jobs. In recent years, jobs are gone and stores have been shut down due to big companies such as Wal-mart.

Overall I don’t think the solution is to eliminate immigration because the problem will still exist. If immigrants were to leave and we still have the same problem, the next thing we would blame for unemployment would be technology such as the self-checkouts in the stores. HELLO!! As long as anyone or anything is helping corporations/companies make profit, they will take advantage of what is given even if it put other people out of jobs.

Corporations/companies knows the citizens are avail to form Unions and press lawsuits against companies’ for any hinder, but illegal immigrants have no documents so companies are least to face lawsuits. If they did, the illegal immigrants can easily get arrested and go back to their country just because the fact their working illegally. These corporations knows exactly what’s going on, but I’m sure the chairmen and the CEOs’ in these corporations aren’t complaining because it’s obvious foreigners work twice as harder and cheaper. Now you tell me..Who wouldn’t like that??

  1. Well, we are on two completely different sides of the spectrum. You are conservative and stuck on 'let's kick all of these illegals out' and I believe providing them with a path to citizenship would be a more appropriate way to handle the immigration situation since many of them have developed strong ties to this nation. If you consider someone who left everything behind to come work and live in the shadows of this country in order to provide their family with a better life a criminal, then that is your opinion and while I respect it, I STRONGLY disagree. My mother was an immigrant, a legal one but an immigrant at last and she is the perfect example of an American citizen. She works hard, pays taxes, and celebrates American holidays such as Thanksgiving and Halloween. I know you will argue that since she is the legal type of immigrant than that's okay but in reality I also know other families who do not have papers and yet they are better individuals than many so-called 'real'citizens. I think the immigration debate is just an excuse for conservatives to portray their hatred and form legislation to legalize discrimination. States complain that illegal immigrants don't have car insurance but they are not willing to allow these people to get a license without a social security number and a green card, then how can they get insurance if they don't have a license? It is an interesting contradiction, don't you think so? Well, of course you don't, you are on the other side of the spectrum. Would you like to elaborate your claim that they are being rewarded? If you mean rewarded with free health care from the government provided, I highly doubt it.

  2. I believe there should be a big divide between the type of immigrants in our country. Legal immigrants tend to work the same amount as citizens and are rewarded equally since companies cannot discriminate on citizenship status and thats the way it should be.

On the other hand, Illegal immigrants work harder because they cannot work legally in this country, don't have enough education or experience, language barriers involved and can only find blue collar jobs with these factors. I also agree with Marilyn that they should not be rewarded the same amount as citizens or legal immigrants. First reason is because they do not pay income taxes and expect the other taxpayers to carry them. As stated in the session, around 3 million illegals were already granted citizenship status back in the 90s and if we keep doing this, they will just get used to it.

There are good reasons why most countries have strict enforcement on immigration, it helps maintain the economy by keeping population and job market in check and especially in today's world it helps us be safe from terrorist attacks.

  3. Mary, I appreciate your open-minded perspective about immigration. You are absolutely right, immigrants, legal or illegal, should not become the scapegoat. Bush's preemptive attack and War on Terrorism Policy costs the U.S. trillions and yet some narrow minded individuals insist on blaming immigrants. Immigrants are as responsible for our economic recession, as the Jews were in Germany during the Nazi Administration. NOT VERY MUCH AT ALL. Instead of labeling them as criminals perhaps we should look at our mistakes. Border patrol could do their job a little better. Instead of shooting down innocent people, maybe they could actually develop more effective tactics. However, many conservatives strongly oppose the idea of offering a path to legalization for these millions of people who are vulnerable and live in the shadows. Great post, your paragraph about how technology is replacing human labor is very eye-opening!
